Search and exclusions
Distinguish buffer content, indexed file paths and text saved in the project.
On this page
Three distinct searches
| Search | How it works | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Local · Ctrl+F in editor | Literal, case-insensitive, over the buffer; results include line and column. | 100 matches |
| Permanent Explorer filter | Fuzzy name/path or literal disk content; Ctrl+F toggles. Tree results retain parent folders. Esc clears and restores previous expansion. Opening retains the filter. | Index up to 50,000 entries |
| Project · Ctrl+Alt+F | Literal, case-insensitive, per disk line. Does not include unsaved buffers. One entry per matching line. | 100 lines |
Search the whole project
Opening the palette or new-file dialog, refreshing the index, creating/deleting files or changing exclusions may clear results. Markdown opened in preview has no textarea for the line jump; switch to source to inspect the match.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+F and type text; project search does not automatically execute while typing.
- Enter executes if there are no results. ↑/↓ selects and Enter opens the chosen result.
- Opening preserves query, selection and results. Return with Ctrl+Alt+F. Esc from the modal clears everything.
Session exclusions
Ctrl+E inside file/project search opens exclusions; there is also a palette entry. ↑/↓ selects, Tab completes, Enter toggles a rule or adds typed text when no suggestion is selected. Delete only removes custom patterns.
Uses the root .gitignore and allows disabling base rules or adding temporary patterns; never writes .gitignore. .git cannot be included. It does not load nested .gitignore, global excludes or .git/info/exclude.
Index and limits
The reused index stores up to 50,000 entries, including folders. Project search and line count announce a partial index; the file filter does not show the same notice. F5 in the filter rebuilds and repeats the query.
Reads skip binary, unreadable or over-2-MiB files. There is no regex, replacement, semantic search or circular F3 navigation. Local search lists non-overlapping matches.
